An Iran Intent on Nuclear War is Not What Opponents Fear
Iran is on the road to developing nuclear-weapon capability, probably not meant for war as some fear, but instead to strengthen its regional influence, argues Hagai M. Segal for the Guardian. Having nuclear weapons would guarantee a strategic balance for Iran – strengthen its support for Hamas, Hezbollah and its ability to intervene in the internal affairs of Arab neighbors. The EU, the US and others continue to opt for strong sanctions, hoping to pressure Iran into ending its nuclear pursuits while Iran is confident it can withstand the pressure. “Continuing to shun each and every opportunity to prove that accusations are unfounded will only fuel fears [Iran] has something very sinister to hide,” concludes Segal. Military action remains on the table, but is not a viable option; it could potentially backfire by strengthening domestic and even some regional support for the Iranian regime. The good news is that neither the West nor Iran wants to go to war in the near future, so the standoff is likely to continue. – YaleGlobal
