Israel Warns Tehran Nears Immunity From Attack
Iran’s leaders have long maintained that Israel as a Jewish state should not exist. Israeli leaders vow to use military intervention, if necessary, to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, with an enriched-uranium program that goes beyond the demands for civilian-use energy or medical devices. The US and Europe have organized sanctions against Iran, but Israel argues those may not be enough to end the program, explains Tobias Buck of the Financial Times. Israel warns that Iran’s nuclear-weapon program is nearing completion – much of the apparatus is stored underground – and that time is running out for the international community to negotiate a peaceful conclusion. Israel is alerting Iran and the world that military intervention is not off the table. Israel could strike Iran on its own, but that would likely trigger war in the volatile region, a spike in energy prices and global resentment. Most threatened by the rhetoric, policies and nuclear weapons of the two nations are the citizens of Iran and Israel. – YaleGlobal
